  • ANAL BEARD "din noir" ----- (Dance of days : this is just as cool as their name. the label site talks about them as surrealist punks ... whatsoever, this is good english stuff. don't know, the music ? brit punk pop, very confusing and super lyrics and sing songs and most of all - the coolest song titles.. such as "I feature (prominently) in three blyth power bootleg videos", "fuckbastard" and "a date with vinylman". they even have a ... mhm, mötörhead cover (??) called "eight of spades". this is crazy, and it's good to know that bands like anal beard exist. yeah right !)

  • ANGSTZUSTAND "malen nach zalen" Yage meets Catharsis meets Acme ----- (Silent Stagnation : I was really waiting for this second album of northern Germany's finest ! It's finally here and now after I listened to it several times I can say that it was worth to wait. The first album was already very great but this one here is even better 'cause it's even more aggressive. Like on the last record the lyrics are very intelligent and in German, every songs comes with an explanation and beside the booklet they attached an English lyric-sheet ! The booklet itself is more like a book with the similar design like the cover. Let's come to their music, the album opens with the title-track "Malen Nach Zahlen" and has a short instrumental Intro before Angstzustand start their metallic hardcore attack, mid-tempo grooving hardcore with a screamo-touch ! Compared to the last album the sound hasn't changed that much, they just developed it and stayed true to their hardcore-style with this Uranus-touch, which makes their musical creation even more interesting. They also throw in calm passages with dissonant riffing but just till they break out with deep growled, shouted vocals and straight forward metallic hc !)

  • ATOMIC GARDEN “radio activity” = second rate, 18 minutes mcd, very good stuff ----- (Keep Out : Le groupe Clermontois Atomic Garden risque bien de devenir ton nouveau groupe préféré! ...

  • BABIES THREE “the luzhin defence" 22 minutes between boy sets fire and grade, 4th cd ----- (Munchkin Music : Crashing guitars, screams entwined with clean vocals and a rhythm section that specialises in structured chaos are the key elements in Babies Three's music. All this is well executed and it kinda makes me sad knowing that these guys aren't around any more just as I got to know their music. If you like bands such as Grade, then you might wanna dig in !)

  • BALBOA "s/t" usa ----- (Poison free : While this review update included many good records from good and often well known bands, I was waiting for that surprise that pops up here and there while reviewing bands. Balboa may be this surprise. Balboa present you an unique mix of various genres. On the one hand, you have that emotional, desperate approach that lets you think of screamo, especially because of the nothing but desperate screaming singer and the sometimes hectic and powerful parts of anger and frustration. On the other hand, you will be confronted by metallic hardcore that lets room for rocking parts, mosh and melodic guitars. The third addition is an emotional, calmed down picture of instrumental soundscapes. While metalcore or destructive screamo is a certain element of their music, they do not focus on it too much, but instead they let various other influences take part in their music, which is a good thing. Balboa often take their time to transport emotions through vast instrumental landscapes, always one step before turning into a jam, but always controlled enough to be called a real song. Maybe, early Standstill, one of the better known bands from Europe doing this sound, can be called as a musical, but not vocal comparism, which should be taken as a compliment)

Forge Again

3

  • BANANAS AT THE AUDIENCE "staring at the surface" their second full length

Bata

6

  • BARRA HEAD "we are your numbers" their 2nd full length, a really great band ----- (Piccadilly : Ten uncompromising rock songs that fuse melody with rythmical complexity served with the energetic and skillful playing that the band has become known for at their live shows. Although built around the traditional set-up; guitar, bass and drums, the music and the lyrics created cannot be described as traditional. Complex rhythmic patterns effortlessly interact with more simple passages; quiet, introvert melodies fuse with sudden explosions of noise as political lyrics become existential statements. It doesn't fit any genre. It is complex in its composition, its rhythm, its poetry and its melody. It's dynamical, emotional and thoughtful. For fans of: Shellac, Reynolds etc)

  • BLOCKO their first full length after ep's and mcd, great stuff ----- (Collective zine : This is just sheer melodic punk genius. Long meandering songs with awesome guitars breaks and windy finger patterns. The bass is as excellent as ever and complimets Nij's guitar in a way which cannot be bettered. The drums thump along with grace and precision whether its for build ups or just crashing out in the chorus. The fucking voice on this guy is out of this world. I haven't been moved by a punk singer this much since Frankie of Leatherface. You may have heard the "main" comparisons before of Leatherface, Broccoli and Hooton 3 Car. I really think that now Blocko sound like Blocko. They have taken the sound into their own, the influences are still there but now they are themselves. This album is an honest, passionate and incredible album. Maybe it'll break your heart too !)

  • BREAK "idols …" between jr ewing (they've a split ep with them as well), breach and refused, chaotic metal emo hardcore with some melodies, from norway ----- (Walked In Line : A bit similar to Jr Ewing the other great band from Norway who splitted the first release with them. But this first MCD sounds more chaotic with an evil bass player and singer assaults with metal influences. Some very nice melodies and original touch move you to a strange dancing. This new stuff gives you good vibes and enough groove with full energy to keep you dancing your head in your hands like a beautiful warrior walk ...)

  • BURDEN / AUTOMATIC "dedicated …" mcd, old school hc from canada & germany ----- (Poison Free : BURDEN are probably one of the most sympathic bands around, and they rock live and on record. This is classic in your face hardcore, with an old school outlook and a good dose of modern influences. Imagine the guys from Trial take the guys from Ensign to their hands to record something, thats it, and it is good. AUTOMATIC should already be known for their rocking, melodic and in some ways emotional hardcore. Nice small little piece of plastic.)

  • CAPE CANAVERAL "driving all night" uk very good emo pop ala joshua, mineral, christie front drive ----- (Fracture : I've liked this band from the first time I heard them, I was so impressed with the last CDEP. I knew they were a good band but this surpasses all of my expectations. Very accomplished compositional skills and the ability to create a vibe that draws you in and fills you with emotion. They produce a sound that is very much like the better MIDWAY STILL material, and on the strongest songs they have an uncanny knack of bringing to mind the awesome Ken Chambers and The MOVING TARGETS, yes I know that's a very strong accolade, but fully deserved. What an awesome CD this is and puts them right at the top of the pile of the finest UK bands, I suggest you pick this up immediately if you like your music honest, passionate and breathtakingly beautiful. Superb on every level, no flaws, no flannel just quality)

Seismic

  • CARNAGE "dynamic execution" between hydra head and chrome saint magnus stuff like botch or converge, 11 tracks, germany ----- (Silent Stagnation : Carnage are from Germany and present eleven awesome songs and at the first moment I thought they are just another Old School band but this is totally false and after 26 minutes playtime I have a totally different opinion. Because they sometimes play hardcore in the vein of Botch, just remember New School from '95 and mix it with more brutal and chaotic elements and so Carnage create their own sound ! Fast played old school passages are combined with amazing playfully guitar riffs and mid-tempo Hardcore. The lyrics handle about personal and angry lyrics and they are shouted and screamed out. Enjoyable album)

Moodswig

3€

  • CHOCOLATE KISS “les boom boom” their first cd ----- (Collective Zine : Chocolate Kiss do the ex-member thing. And you can spot it right off the bat once the vocals are wandering across the mellow Christie Front Drive-esque introduction to "Right Out Or Right On" (the guitar sound is hauntingly similar though the music is a little more poppy). For singing in Chocolate Kiss is the wonderful Catfish Mauldin, Car versus Driver my friend, Car versus Driver. James Joyce is here too. Hal Al Shedad. Georgia rock stars. Musically, Chocolate Kiss are taking you back to '96-'97. Remember when emo rock actually sounded good ? CK do. And you can hear all the wonderful influences of that time. I already mentioned CFD. Boilermaker is the big one, with the music having that same kind of melancholy air about it, yet without descending into self-pity or getting stupid slow. Really, Deep Elm destroyed this style of music through over saturation of the Sunny Day gene. Chocolate Kiss shoot some life back into it, and though it might just be a quick hit, it'll bring the smile to the face. Wonderful.)

Moodswig

  • CIRCLE "the day elvis shook his ass" their second cd, 18 minutes of rockin' hardcore with chanted & screamy vocals, great stuff ! their third cd is just out on Reflections ----- (Fracture : CIRCLE expertly play a mix of hardcore and rock'n'roll. It sounds like the bastard son of AT THE DRIVE-IN, REFUSED and OIL with Martin from SPY VS. SPY singing lyrics that make no sense whatsoever (like AT THE DRIVE-IN). Only 5 songs on here which is a real shame as it's a top-quality record. If you like any of the aforementioned bands, pick this up because it's terrific.)

  • CLOSE SECOND mcd, 14 minutes ----- (Inside knowledge : close second from Noord-Brabant, the Netherlands blows a fresh wind trough our dutch emopunk-scene. With current- and ex-members of Born From Pain, Reaching Forward, Razor Crusade, Facing Down and Of No Avail you expect raw and brutal, but what you see is not what you get. Influences are heard, especially on the punk-level, but they know to rise a athmosphere even to bands like Ignite. Guided by clear voice and overwhelming dedication a must see for fans of Face Tomorrow, Foo Fighters and saves the day)

  • CORNFLAMES "the farewell drive" their second full length ----- (Inside Knowledge : I have to admit that this album is perfectly fit to be the first tunes of a brand new day. Very accessible and well considered. The tight production makes these Belgian sound a bit American. The sound is a bit like Hot Water Music meets The Get Up Kids. After I've checked these guys live at the Funtime fest 2003 it has become one of my favorite bands from my southern neighbors. They know well to manage their sound and know to create a specific atmosphere which grabs my attention and gets a hold of it.)

Funtime

7€

  • CRIATURA "gente sin fabricas" ----- (Fracture : Their lyrics are of a personal, but political nature. Musically it's a mixed bag of bones. Mainly it reminds me of Spitboy mixed with Fun People, but with jazzy discordant twits, just to throw you a curve ball when you get all complacent. I couldn't let it pass without mentioning this improvising sound of say Fugazi wich all in all makes for a really interesting release. Not my usual bag, but cool for that sunday afternoon with a cup of tea and the kids running around)

  • CRUSH MY CALM "lies make …" with ex mine, blue water boy and sundowner, german melodic and raging hardcore ----- (Enough Zine : "Crush My Calm", exactly describes the music coming out of my speakers, when listening to their full length "Lies make life easier". No calmness, but `no bullshit` Hardcore. Straight, with some melodic licks and an aggressive singer. Reminds me a lot of 90s New Age Records stuff… and I bet they´re an intense live band. The only thing I have to complain about, is the fact, that Crush My Calm definitely add nothing new to the genre. But maybe I´m just an old and boring asshole and the kids will love it. So, if you´re into raging, straight and fast Hardcore like back in the days, Crush My Calm are a band to look out for. I´m not lying, at least not his time …)

  • DEAD AFTER SCHOOL / CHRISTIAN BLOOD split 10 tracks with 2 uk bands ----- (Engineer : Fuck the punk/metal divide. That's what CnC wanted to achieve with this split release. Lets try putting a fast paced hardcore band on a split with a heavy as hell metal band and do something a bit different for a change. Overton's Dead After School offer five tracks of energetic, upbeat positive hardcore on this split CD. This is Fast, Metallic edged hardcore punk in the vein of Imbalance and Strike Anywhere played by the kids for the kids with a mix of emotive and political lyrics addressing subject matters such as anti war, pro positive dancing, anti Tony Blair, scene unity, love and friendship. A very good start from a very promising band. Andover metal kids Christian Blood will rip off your heads and shit down your throats with their debut offering on this split CD. Five tracks of abrasive, technical and raw sounding metallic hardcore played by the angriest band in Hampshire. Once again with a nice mix of emotive/political lyrical expression. If you like your metal brutal then Christian Blood will give you that and then some. These two bands are as different as chalk and cheese but it all works very nicely when it all comes)

DEAR DIARY is one of my favourite emotional rockbands ever. I like this guys and there music. I've got this piece called 'laughing ends like this' and the first I've seen was the great coverartwork. Punkrock smashhits are followed by emotional and melancholic songs…! The most songs are going straight forward and are combined with great vocals which let me feel their emotions with them…! For my taste is DEAR DIARY one of the best German and European EMO bands with many alternation in their songs. If you like emotional punkrock you have to call this piece your own !)

Quand " anders leben ! ? " est mixé à " all the footprints... " on a droit à " the sympathy without love "…Ou quelque chose comme ça ! ?

"Hat Danko" certainly sees a more mature (shudder) Dugong, but instead of the shiteness that entails, it's infinitely more rewarding. Songs that are catchy as hell already, revealing even more subtle layers on repeated listens. They've definitely stepped out of the shadows of their influences, although it is still worth mentioning Samiam and Husker Du, for those who've just joined us. You should get this - not because they live down the road to you, not because they're British, and not because they sound like your favourite bands. You should get it cos it's one of the finest albums released this year. Hell yeah.)

  • ELECTROSLEEP INTERNATIONAL "anthology volume one" usa ----- (indie work shop : this CD brings to mind numerous bands, past and present, without stepping on any toes along the way. This Atlanta outfit plays the aggressive style of rock that will have you referencing a large variety of artists. Bands like Hot Hot Heat, Shellac, and even Song of Zarathustra can be name checked without feeling a bit out of place. But they manage to blend all this together to create something to call their own. These 12 songs will transport you back to that first basement show you ever attended. It's that first rock band you saw that used hardcore as a cornerstone instead of arena rock. They are raw and dirty, bringing the grime back into the rock soul. Frontman … umm, hell I don't know which one is the singer, but he embodies both the franticness of the San Diego explosion, and the menacing presence of Steve Albini. It's a wonderful accompaniment for the chaotic rock sounds that these guys have put to tape)

  • FOG IN THE SHELL "a secret north" ----- (Aversion : More than 40 minutes of bleak atmospheres and plodding rhythms in the vein of a stripped down Neurosis or something. There aren't that many bells and whistles. Occasionally there will be some well handled synths or subtle ambient textures, but it's really just guitar, drums, bass, and vocals. And hell, most of the vocals are very softly delivered, almost sung in a whisper, while most of the tracks revolve around repetitious instrumentation that builds and sways back and forth from flowing clean melodies to hard hitting distorted rhythms (with a major emphasis on the calm and sinister clean passages). I like the recording, too. All they need to do is make the distortion thicker and more in your face. Everything else sounds awesome. I'd turn the vocals up a little, but the drums are perfect, the clean guitars and experimental textures are great, etc. The layout is stripped down but pretty cool, with some abstract high contrast artwork and a minimal color scheme, as well as numerous band photos and other random images in the center spread. This is an interesting disc. Not overtly original per se, but something a little different. In a way if they used distortion more often it would make them less unique, but at the same time I think it would make them better, as there aren't quite enough dynamics here. This is worth checking out, though… definitely an experiment in what constitutes "heaviness")

It doesn't matter which one you prefer, because Gob Squad combines both styles. These Danes have played with Ten Foot Pole, D.R.I. and Against Me, plus they played the Roskilde festival in 2001, so you could say that they've been around. Still this is their debut full length, filled with feel good punk rock. Although not every song has happy lyrics, they still manage to bring them with a happy smile. Another cool thing about Gob Squad is their love for cool guitar riffs and solos, which really adds to their sound. They also know how to use blues influences, as they prove in the songs with the well chosen title "The Blues". So if you like punk rock and you need some new bands to freshen up your CD stack, Gob Squad is certainly worth checking out)

  • GREEN ACRE mcd, uk jazzy melodic emo hardcore ----- (Collective Zine : They mix up very mathy guitar sounds with bouncy melodies, so it's dead easy for me to pin the tail on the mid-period Braid / Giants Chair style donkey. The vocals are sung with a lot of passion and energy, and on opener "Hotch Arrow Jamaica" the part where the singer goes "hey!" and "without knowing, without knowing" is supremely Cap'n Jazz-y. I love the guitar sound this band has, it's very warm and enticing. The Green Acre are a muchly under-rated / under-appreciated band I feel, check this out if 1996 indie/emo is your fetish because you won't be disappointed.)

Together these four guys play heartfelt Punk Rock with a sometimes melancholic edge, and of course you can sometimes hear out As Friends Rust or Hot Water Music during the "No division" era (still my favourite album by HWM). But the Grey Goose come up with enough originality to make me really like this record. For the record: "'Til the medicine takes" was mixed by Chris Wollard from Hot Water Music who also played guitar on "Elimination process" and comes with a damn fine artwork/packaging, so please go out and pick up this cool album)

  • ILEGALITY / SVINE split, 22 tracks digipack ----- (Punk international : Eleven songs from each of these two bands, this split is basically two albums at the price of one. And they're both pretty fine punk rock albums indeed. Ilegality play rapid punk rock the way it's supposed to be played. Musically this band lunges straight for the throat with the kind of fury that would give the Casualties a run for their money. These guys shred through their songs at maximum velocity, sustaining each one for approximately 3 minutes. Their knack for rousing chorus anthems is so refined that I feel sucked into singing along. Three of the four members contribute to the vocals, and they're able to create explosive punk rock tunes that rival those on Rancid's self-titled 2000 album. This half of the album alone is worth top marks. Svine play on the same page as Ilegality : equal parts intensity and angst, but slightly less in anthemic aptitude. This band doesn't possess quite the same magnetic force that draws me into their songs the way Ilegality does. Their songs are also shorter, more abrasive, and slightly lower in quality of production. Nevertheless, they're a suitable complement half to this split CD and I feel fortunate to have received the opportunity to listen to what they have to offer)

Joe's soaring guitars are both powerful and pretty, while his vocals range from uplifting harmonies to harsh wounded-animal screams. Blake Thomas provides the rhythm section, effortless delivering drum beats with guts and groove, while Corey Gass's pulsating basslines catch you right in the throat. IN ARCADIA are driving, melodic, and most of all moving)

The sound is pretty similar to their album and while they've kept to the same formula, the quality is better all round, cleaner and more polished than past efforts. If you haven't heard their first two seven inches then you have already missed out. Absolutely incredible british punk rock that takes notes from Britain and America from the 70's, 80's, 90's and still manages to sound totally original. K-line play fast, loud, tight frantic punk rock. It reminds me of everything and nothing. Bands that come to name are Fugazi, Mohinder, Leatherface, Bad Religion and even Quicksand. These are all amazing songs, simple yet effective at getting their point across. The sound is also brilliant with sharp blazing guitars, thumping bass and multiple vocalists singing shouting and screaming along without relent. This is an independent piece if british punk history and if I can help one more person pick this up then I can feel proud having played my part. Boss Tuneage sometimes overload us with pop-punk records most of which are great but with The Milwaukees, Blocko, Despitado and K-line they show that branching out and taking a chance can pay dividends in the long run)

"Honest, I Swear..." isn't quite as abrasive or chaotically mathy as their new album so in a way it might be a better place to start, unless you like to dive in at the deep end. In amongst the complex and frantic hardcore of this album is a load of melodic punk rock songs. Imagine a seamless blend of two bands like SMALL BROWN BIKE and TWELVE HOUR TURN if you want to conjure up the contrasts and twists that THE LADDERBACK cast about in their music. The guitars go from entwined jangling melodies straight into razor-sharp spazzy riffs and the vocals too take a course of contrasting sung and screamed. If it sounds like it won't work, trust me, it does and whether you like your punk with chaos or your spaz-hardcore with melody this baby will deliver the goods)

  • LOST COWBOY HEROES "we only wrote these songs for us" ----- (Bokson : …

• MAGICRAYS "take me home" pop rock, it's very quiete but so great … I love that cd ----- (Bleeding Heroes : Calme, introspectif, aérien, mélancolique... sont autant d'adjectifs qui pourraient servir à qualifier cet album vraiment abouti.

They really remind me of that incredible south american band Fun People, in that their vocalists sound very similar and have a high energy bite that is just waiting to explode. If you will, imagine old SNFU (at their best), but speed up and with a distinctly european sound then this is what these guys sound like. And thankfully "Storyboard" provides that exact same blast, with ten brand new songs, not one of which has a duff moment. They take their cues from some classic old UK bands like MEGA CITY 4 and DRIVE, but give it a whole new fresher feel, basing it on much thicker guitar riffs and more rock rhythms than either of those bands. Each chorus bursts out with hooks and vocal harmonies standing proud, and the occasional addition of a piano in amongst the driving rhythms sounds fucking ace too. MILES APART have proved yet again that they're one of the finest melodic punk bands around right now, knocking shades out of all the American generic skate-punk bands with music that's both powerful, emotional and hookladen. There's really no excuse not to grab this while it's hot.)

  • REALIGN ‘the urban …” german rocking, new school emo hardcore, their 2nd cd, great ! ----- (Poison Free : I loved their debut MCD and this is not any worth. Groovy hardcore with a new school edge, similar to the sound Jr Ewing, with some elements Refused and other scandinavian bands are well known for. I was surprised by some of the stylistic elements they use here, e.g. I suddenly noticed a double base where you would not expect it, and then there was a solo lead that fits into the music really well but is rather untypical. All this is packed into a still punkrock outfit, with nice german / english lyrics and a good production. The best thing about this band is that they developed a sound of their own.)

Lots of mood changes and intricate patterns make this CD captivating from start to finish, plus a nice use of soundbites makes this feel like some sort of ongoing discourse that the listener is intimately involved in. I really liked this and hope to hear more of them even if the title confuses me more than an exposition of Hegelian dialectic)

Believe me, I had to look twice in the booklet to finally assure myself this is not a Fat Wreck release. With their mostly fast, but always mature and detailed appearing songs Rentokill don,t have to step back from comparisons to well known acts, such as NOFX or No Use For A Name - just a little dirtier (the cover-version of Rancid's "Olympia W.A.? fits perfectly!). As much as Good Riddance the band incorporates the right amount of melancholy into their music, what I always appreciate. The second guitar comes up with wonderful harmonies, so expect plenty of hooks and memorable moments. The production of "Back To Convenience? gives this highly professional record the right sound and once again I had to look twice to notice it was not done in the infamous Blasting Rooms, but in Vienna,s Sideburn Studios. The sharp looking artwork was done by the band itself - my respect for that! If you have a weak spot for melodic, but powerful punk music then do yourself the favour and get this album !)

Three marvelous bands on 1 cd. Rydell has the honor to open with rocking emo. I was very exited about San Geronimo when I read it featured ex-members of Lifetime, Drowningman and Jets to Brazil. You clearly hear the influences of those bands. San Geronimo is definitely the top of this split-album. The closing credits go to A Rocket Sent to You, which perfectly makes this album to an end. • SAINTE CATHERINES "the art of arrogance" they just signed on fat wreck, good stuff ----- (Enough : I guess arrogance is something Sainte Catherines from Canada had to get along with in the past, as they´re nowhere near concerning popularity compared to similar bands like Avail or Hot Water Music. Anyway, I think these times are over by the release of their new release "The Art Of Arrogance". Hidden behind titles like "Faux- Marxist Anarcho- Punks Anthem" or "I can´t have sex all the time" the 11 songs offer clever personal lyrics, sometimes with a political touch. Really fun to read along. One of my favourite quotes is i.e. "Get me out of Starbuck town, a black train to one real city. We are the poor! We are dirty! We are the drunks! We´ll die happy." Not to forget about the music, which is way more differentiated than the one on their previous releases. Angry, melodic, raw, heavy, fragile, dirty and passionate. Just listen to "It´s all about Ja Rule baby", which is an instrumental songs in the vein of bands like Mogwai, get surprised by an straightforward dirty Punksong to find out that they remind of Catharsis concerning heaviness and angriness when you see them playing with three guitarists live! I rarely compare bands with Pegboy due to the fact that very few can attempt to compare to the genius of that band , but Scuttle have a similar vibe. The guitars especially have the same spacious massiveness as Mr. Haggerty's, the drums are right up there in originality and the vocals are a fine mix of harmonies and raging screams.)

When the first song started playing I was pleasantly surprised. A fresh and melodic guitar riff and upbeat drums made my head move along almost instantly. Then the vocals kicked in and then I just knew I was going to like this. "Godspeed" is a captivating mixture of guitarrock, emo and hardcore. Catchy and intense. The catchy parts mostly have clean vocals with anthemic choruses and fine backups. The "heavy" breakdowns, which occasionally remind me of Boy Sets Fire, feature tough guitar hooks and screaming vocals. This record offers 10 fine memorable tunes that simply rock. Godspeed was mastered by Roger Lian at Masterdisk, NY (Slayer, Pantera, Sick Of It All, Monster Magnet…)

  • SFP "down to memory lane" ----- (Asice : We don't have to direct our attention to the USA if we're looking for professional sounding punk rock, because Belgium has been hiding a four piece called SFP who prove with "Down To Memory Lane" that the lowlands also take care of business when it comes to melodic punk rock. The twelve songs on this CD are surprisingly diverse and especially the production is very good. The lyrics do not only give a humoristic view on society ("2 P.M."), but they also deal with serious issues in songs like "Make A Speech" and "Left Behind". Because of the way that singer Wim's voice sounds, and also because of the positive atmosphere that SFP radiates, they remind me of Unsung Zeros and Blink 182. And don't think that these guys from Belgium aren't as good as their American colleagues, because they are. SFP can become just as big as some of their colleagues from overseas, as far as I'm concerned. They sure have the quality to do it)

With Jimmy Eat World's great success we can really see band rise and fall every single day. Regina, Saskatchewan's Sylvie sound totally oblivious to the current MTV-style "emo" hype, instead drawing influence from the DC scene that spawned integral emotional hardcore bands like Jawbox and Fugazi. I Wish I Was Driving features nine excellent songs that set a pleasant, uplifting mood that is great for when the chips are down. Raspy, heartfelt vocals push this into the upper echelon of the genre. Sure, the album tends to drag through some moody ballads and instrumental interludes, but in a world where most bands are pushing pop as emo, it's refreshing to hear a band who aren't afraid to let their songs develop and pulsate)

  • THE BITTER LIFE TYPECAST "happy endings for lowlives" their 2nd full length ----- (Aversion : The best release to date from this excellent and ever improving emo/indie rock outfit. Their style is still driven by clean guitars and really smooth singing, but thankfully they've started to spice things up with more vocal harmonies, and the recording quality has taken a noticeable step up as well. Everything is really bright, with a good sense of density and natural warmth, and it's not over polished either … This band really deserves more attention. Had they been putting this stuff out 10 years ago they'd definitely have been pretty revered by fans of the style, because this definitely reminds me a lot of the type of emo I was digging as I was "growing up" or whatever - which is to say that it's a lot stronger than most of what gets tagged as "emo" by today's standards)

  • THE HARA-KEE-REES "II" their second full length, digipack ----- (Lowcut : the second release of this german band (with members of King Kahn & His Shrines, The Astronauts and Metrophon) is going to blow your head off from the beginning and it's just hard to get rid of it. This explosive mix of 60's northwest garage punk comparable to bands like The Wailers, The Sonics or The Kingsmen on the one hand and powerful Rock'n'Roll on the other hand guarantees fun in your living room as well as crowded dance floors. Classical garage burners, sometimes with Saxophone, meet modern sounds, fast punk songs, and mix with mid tempo pieces. The sometimes melodic sometimes screamed vocals, that definitely have their own style make this record an excellent and diversified garage album. This has a super cool authentic 60s feel to it. Raw guitars, loud solos, great vocals and fucked up organ and saxophone now and then. High on intensity and low on intellectuality - just like we want it! All the songs rock in a fine Back from the Grave kinda way and it's the best Euro 60s garage band I've heard for years. • THREE MINUTE MOVIE "another night, exchanged letters" their second cd ----- (Fracture : It would probably be fair to say that 3MM's debut album 'Rhythm of the Wind and Water' was something of a watershed in the Japanese scene and without wanting to overstate the facts, was something of a classic album, so this sophomore effort had high hopes piled upon it; and it holds it's head up high. At it's heart is still a BRAID beat, with twisting riffs that know innately how to coil around each other and when to go for head-down straight-up driving rock but on 'Another Night..' 3MM have added a few new dimensions of pop hooks that sit atop the sound beautifully. The songs are vitalized with an enthusiam and potency that Japanese bands seem to inject effortlessly, and the end result is an incredible album of powerful and catchy emo-rock. With so many emo-rock bands churning out music that is overpolished and sterile music these days, it's refreshing to hear one that delivers it with enough passion and fervour to still warrant the 'emo' part of the emo-rock tag. They combine these three musical styles to their mostly unique mixture whereat they sometimes remind me of Hot Water Music. Don't get me wrong Wafflehouse* are going into another direction than HWM but while their rocking parts with the background choirs they sometimes sound like the named one ! But Wafflehouse* are so much more, dissonant rock passages with some heavy riffs are alternated by Emo-Pop harmonies or dissonant sounding Hardcore. Through all that different sounds the record doesn't get boring and there are always new sides of their music audible like keyboard or piano sounds and female singing. The main voice is provided by a male singer who knows how to pass on the different emotions of the music ! I miss a little bit the permanence within the songs and that record would be even better when they leave out those chaotic parts and throw in more of the heavy guitar riffs ! What really makes Yesterday's Ring stand out in a whirlwind of punkers grabbing acoustic guitars is singer Hugo Mudie's Boreale-soaked drawl, which goes right for the heartstrings. If you like it slow, rough and real, Yesterday's Ring is waiting for you. 8/10)
